Berlin is a city of freedom, raw energy, and authenticity: the perfect backdrop for Kimia and Annelie’s same-sex wedding photographer Berlin experience.

When they reached out to me, their request was simple: no rigid poses, no forced smiles, and no stopping the natural flow of their day. As a documentary photographer with a street photography edge, that’s exactly how I love to work.

My role wasn’t to direct them or turn their day into an endless photoshoot, but to blend into the background and tell their story as it actually unfolded. From the quiet morning moments getting ready at home to their Standesamt civil ceremony, a scenic cruise along the Spree River, and a hands-on cultural cooking class—this was a celebration defined by real emotion, inclusivity, and zero staging.

Getting Ready: Quiet Moments Before the City Energy

Every great urban reportage starts with intimacy. Kimia and Annelie chose to begin their day calmly in their apartment. Documenting this phase is all about observing the small, subtle interactions: nervous laughter, final adjustments to their outfits, and quiet glances before stepping out into the vibrant streets. No fake “putting-on-the-ring” setups—just life happening in real time.

The Standesamt Civil Ceremony & Spree River Cruise

Moving from the privacy of home to the local town hall, the atmosphere shifted to pure emotion. Civil ceremonies in Germany can sometimes feel formal, but Kimia and Annelie brought their own warmth into the space, surrounded by their closest friends and family.

After making it official, we avoided the traditional city traffic and boarded a boat along the Spree River. Cruising through Berlin offered a unique perspective of the city’s iconic architecture while giving the couple and their guests total freedom to celebrate, sip drinks, and enjoy the wind without a camera being shoved in their faces.

A Cultural Feast & Cooking Class

Instead of a standard sit-down dinner, the evening unfolded with an interactive cooking masterclass honoring Kimia’s heritage. Food has an incredible way of bringing people together, and capturing guests chopping, tasting, and laughing created some of the most dynamic, unscripted images of the entire day.
